    Notes
    • Kenneth became King of Scots in 971, when his predecessor Cuilen was killed by the Strathclyde Britons. There are some indications that Kenneth had a joint kingship with Cuilen's brother Olaf until 977, when Olaf was killed. Kenneth led successful raids against Strathclyde in both 971 and 972. In 973, Kenneth attended a conference of kings at Chester, in England, which was probably organized by Edgar, King of England. Kenneth appears to have a quiet, but successful reign, was killed 'by treachery' in 995, and succeeded by Constantine son of Cuilen, a distant cousin. It is possible that Kenneth married an Irish woman from Leinster, as a twelfth-century Scottish poem calls his son Malcolm 'son of a woman of the Leinstermen'.
