Alfred sailed to Boston, USA on the SS Cephalonia arriving 30 May 1890 having left Liverpool on the 22nd, 8 days earlier.

This was a Cunard ship built by Laird Brothers at Birkenhead. Her details were - length 430.6ft x beam 46.5ft, one funnel, three masts, iron construction, single screw and a speed of 14 knots, weighing in at 5,517 tons gross. There was passenger accommodation for 200-1st and 1,500-3rd class. Launched on 20th May 1882, she sailed from Liverpool on 23rd Aug.1882 on her maiden voyage to Queenstown (Cobh) and Boston. She started her last voyage on this service on 12th Sep.1899 and then made two voyages as a Boer War transport. In 1900 she was sold to the Chinese Eastern Railway and renamed HAILOR, she was sunk as a blockship at Port Arthur in 1904.[North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P.Bonsor, vol.1,p.153]

General Don's Muster of 1815

February 1793, France again declared a war with England - and in Jersey the local Militia was the prime defensive force. In 1806 General George Don took the appointment of Jersey's Lieutenant-Governor and immediately called a Muster, a register of all the island's men who qualified for Militia service.

This muster was repeated in 1815, parish by parish
