    • He fought in the Battle of Crécy on 26 August 1346 as he and his men fought alongside King Edward III of England as he attempted to seize the French throne after the death of Charles IV. Gilbert was invested as a Knight on 26 August 1346 from the King on the field of Crécy, for his brilliant services. On 8 May 1362 he began work on Workington Hall, when he laid the first stone of the chief tower.
